You're Not Alone: Finding Connection in a Lonely World

THE FEELING NO ONE TALKS ABOUT

Loneliness is something we all experience at some point - but it’s not something many of us feel comfortable talking about. It can linger in the background for so many people, no matter their age or circumstance.

Over the years, I’ve come to realise how deeply we need to feel connected - to be seen, heard, and accepted for who we are. To feel like we belong. That we have a tribe. A community. People we can show up to as our full selves, without masks or pretence.

This can be especially true for men.

For the men who were told not to feel

For so long, men were taught to be “strong” by staying silent. Told to keep a stiff upper lip. Not to cry. Not to speak about how they were feeling, especially if it involved sadness, fear, or vulnerability.

But strength isn’t silence. Real strength is the courage to speak, to feel, to reach out.

I’ve met so many men (many as clients) - from all walks of life - who have carried pain quietly, feeling they had no right to burden others. Many don’t realise how deeply this disconnection affects their wellbeing. It doesn’t just sit in the mind - it seeps into the body. Stress, anxiety, even physical illness (a

And while younger generations are starting to challenge this outdated blueprint, many older men are still navigating how to

           “open up”.

How to find safe spaces where being vulnerable isn’t a weakness - it’s a human right.

           We heal in connection

No one is meant to do life alone. Humans are hardwired for connection. It’s in our DNA. Community is medicine - and in today’s disconnected world, it’s the kind we desperately need.

Finding your people - those you “vibe with” - isn’t just a social nicety. It’s a lifeline. When we feel safe enough to be ourselves, to be heard without judgment, and to share without shame, something inside us shifts. We begin to heal.

It might start with a shared interest - joining a walking group, attending a men’s circle, volunteering, or even just chatting to a neighbour. These small moments can spark something bigger: trust, friendship, a sense of place.

You don't need to be fixed. You just need to be heard.

Often, what people need most isn’t advice. It’s to be listened to. To be asked, “How are you, really?” and to feel that the question is genuine.

There is something profoundly healing about simply being witnessed - no fixing, no judgment. Just the comfort of being seen.

A new narrative for men (and for us all)

We’re rewriting the script. While the shift might feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable at first, it’s a path worth walking.

           It’s okay to cry.
It’s okay to say you’re not okay.
It’s okay to reach out and ask for help.
It’s okay to feel lonely - and it’s okay to want more connection in your life.

There are communities out there - real ones. Spaces where you can show up exactly as you are. The hardest part is often just taking that first step. Once you do, you'll likely find others who’ve been waiting for someone like you to show up too.

If you’re feeling lonely, please know this: you are not broken. You’re human. And there

           are

people out there who will get you, who will hear you, who will make you feel less alone in the world.

The Power of Language: How Our Words Shape Our Reality

As a holistic counsellor, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful language can be. The words we use don’t just describe our world - they create it.

When we constantly tell ourselves we're worried, anxious, or not good enough, our brain starts to believe it, and our body follows suit.

But when we change the way we speak to ourselves, we can shift our energy and our mindset toward a more positive, empowered space. It’s a small change in perspective that can make a big difference in our overall well-being.

           Overcoming Anxiety Through Positive Self-Talk

One of the simplest yet most effective tools for overcoming anxiety is changing the way we speak to ourselves. Think about it - if you’re afraid of something, like public speaking, and you tell yourself you're anxious because you're "just not good at it," you're unknowingly setting yourself up for a stressful experience. But it doesn’t have to be that way. By intentionally replacing those negative thoughts with positive affirmations, we can create a more balanced and calm state of mind.

Here are a few steps I recommend helping overcome anxiety before it takes hold:

           Create a List of Affirmations

Write down a few positive affirmations or reassuring thoughts that you can return to whenever anxiety starts to creep in. Taking a moment to read through them can help you shift into a more grounded, positive mindset. These might include:

"This doesn’t have to be as difficult as I think."

"I am prepared, and I can handle this."

"I’ve faced challenges before, and I’ll succeed again."

"Mistakes are part of growth, and I embrace them."

"I am in control of how I respond to situations."

"I trust myself to navigate this."

           Prepare and Rehearse

Give yourself the best possible chance to succeed by preparing thoroughly. The more prepared you feel, the more confident you’ll be. Rehearse your material or situation and pair that with your positive affirmations. This combination will help you feel calm and in control, empowering you to move forward with clarity.

           Celebrate Your Progress

No matter what the outcome, take a moment to acknowledge how far you’ve come. Self-praise is incredibly important, especially when we face challenges. By celebrating even small wins, you reinforce your growth and resilience. Some affirmations to reflect on might include:

"I did my best, and that’s something to be proud of."

"I handled that situation with grace and confidence."

"I’m growing stronger with each experience."

In today's fast-paced world, the concept of setting boundaries is gaining increasing attention. But what does it really mean to create boundaries, and how can we approach this subject in a way that is kind, empowering, and doesn’t come across as harsh or uncaring - especially when it comes to family and friends? Here are some thoughts about establishing boundaries in a way that is clear yet compassionate.

At its core, creating boundaries is about honouring yourself - recognising your needs and taking responsibility for your well-being. Boundaries are an essential tool in maintaining balance, protecting your energy, and ensuring you show up as the best version of yourself for others.

When it comes to personal relationships, boundaries can feel daunting. We might worry that setting limits makes us appear distant, selfish, or uncaring - especially with people we love, but truthfully, boundaries are a form of

and enable deeper, more authentic connections. By clearly defining what you need, you can navigate relationships without overextending yourself or losing sight of your own well-being.

One of the simplest ways to begin is by aligning your boundaries with your core values. I have a personal boundary that reflects the principle of treating others as I would like to be treated. This means I choose to surround myself with people who honour me, who communicate openly, and who treat me with the same respect and care that I offer them in return.

Examples of setting personal boundaries with kindness:

“I’d love to chat, but I’m a bit busy right now. Can we catch up later?”

“I’d love to chat, but I need to take care of a few things now. Let’s chat soon when it works better for both of us.”

“OK, that sounds good, but I need to look at my diary - could I get back to you about that?”

By framing boundaries this way, you’re offering clarity and respect without creating emotional distance.

Boundaries at Work: Reclaiming Balance and Protecting Your Well-Being

Setting boundaries at work is just as crucial as in personal relationships. In a world that seems to encourage overwork and constant connectivity, it’s important to remember that boundaries aren’t a luxury - they’re a necessity. Healthy work-life boundaries allow you to recharge, prevent burnout, and ultimately perform better both personally and professionally.

Here are some ways to create work boundaries without feeling guilty:

Switch Off at the End of the Day:

Create a ritual that signals the end of your workday. This could be something as simple as turning off email notifications or setting a specific time each day to “clock out,” mentally and physically. This helps protect your downtime and allows you to fully engage in other areas of your life.

            Take Your Breaks:

Whether it’s a coffee break or lunch hour, it’s essential to take breaks that nourish you throughout the day. Don’t skip them in the name of productivity. Stepping away from your desk gives you the space to recharge and return to your tasks with renewed focus.

            Learn to Say “No”:

It's okay to turn down extra responsibilities when your plate is already full. Saying no is a powerful way to maintain balance and prevent feeling overwhelmed. If you do say yes, ensure that you’re not compromising your own well-being or pushing past your limits.

Creating Boundaries Without Feeling Guilty

The key to creating boundaries, whether with people or work, lies in clarity and

compassion. Boundaries are not about being rigid or distant - they’re about being honest with yourself and others and making space for the things that truly matter.

By setting clear limits, you create the space needed to nurture your own well-being and allow yourself the freedom to show up as your best self - both at home and at work. It’s not selfish; it’s necessary for your health, productivity, and happiness.

Boundaries are essential for maintaining a healthy balance in life. Whether it’s protecting your energy in relationships or carving out time for yourself at work, boundaries are a way of honouring your needs and your well-being. By setting boundaries with kindness and clarity, we can ensure that we continue to nurture the relationships and spaces that bring us joy - without sacrificing our own peace of mind.

Sometimes life piles up. One minute you're managing, the next you're juggling emotions, to-dos and unexpected curveballs - all at once.

Overwhelm isn't just mental - it's energetic. When our thoughts spiral, our vibrational energy becomes scattered. One simple, grounding tool can help - WRITING.

           Why Writing Helps

When thoughts and emotions associated with them start to pile up, they can stay stuck inside our minds, draining clarity and creating emotional static.

Writing them down creates mind space. It gets the swirl out of your head and onto the page, where it can anchor and ground.

You don't need to be a writer. Just honest. The page will hold your truth.

When it's all too much, pause.

           Breathe. Write. Choose one step.

And remember - you're not alone. We all experience times/moments of overwhelm. And our thoughts and feelings are often more alike than we realise.

When You Can't Stop Worrying: Simple Ways to Refocus and Rise Above It

We all worry - it's part of being human. But sometimes, it can take over. The mind races, jumping from one "what if" to the next, and suddenly you feel anxious, distracted and completely drained. You know worrying doesn't change anything... but switching it off isn't always that simple.

The truth is, worry and fear sit at the lower end of the energetic scale. They're heave, sticky emotions that can trap us in a loop. The good news is: there is gentle, empowering ways to shift out of that space - mentally, emotionally and energetically.

Refocus the Mind: The First Step Back to Clarify

When the mind is stuck in worry, it needs somewhere to land. A helpful first step is to write everything down - every fear, every concern, no matter how small.

The simple act gives your thoughts a "place". Instead of swimming around in your head, they're now on paper where you can see them clearly.

Once you've done that, ask yourself:

What's within my control right now?

What can I let go of, just for today?

Even identifying one action - however small - starts the process of refocusing your energy from worry to empowerment

Energetic Support: Raising Your Vibration

Worry doesn't just affect the mind - it pulls your energy down. To shift out of that frequency, try tuning into higher vibrational tools that naturally support calm and clarity:

            Solfeggio Frequencies

These healing sound frequencies can gently recalibrate your energy. Try 528 Hz (love frequency) or 396 Hz (liberation from fear and guilt). Even 10 minutes can make a difference.

            Vibrational music or sound baths

Let the tones wash over you and clear your energetic field.

            Crystals

Carrying grounding and calming crystals in your pocket (like lepidolite, amethyst or blue lace agate) can offer subtle but powerful support throughout your day.

These are not just "nice ideas", they work because your body, mind and spirit respond to energy.

           Breathe Back Into Balance

When you're stuck in worry, the breath becomes shallow or erratic. Conscious breathing brings you back to the present and soothes the nervous system.

           Try this gentle practice:

Inhale deeply through the nose for 4 counts

            Hold for 2

Exhale slowly through the mouth for 6

Repeat 4-5 times, with one hand over your heart

You'll notice your body begin to settle, and with that, the mind softens too.

           Create an Energetic "Worry Window"

If your thoughts keep circling, give yourself permission to worry intentionally. Choose a 10 minute window each day to let it all our by getting it out of your head and onto paper.

Outside of that time, tell your mind "I'll come back to this later". It's surprisingly effective, and over time, your mind learns to release the grip.

Return to the Present Through the Senses

When worry pulls you into the future, bring yourself back to now with a sensory grounding exercise:

            What can I see?

            What can I hear?

            What can I touch?

            What can I smell?

            What can I taste?

Pair this with a grounding crystal or a few drops of essential oil like lavender or frankincense and you'll feel your nervous system slowly start to regulate.

           Closing Thought

You don't have to fight your worry - but you can shift it. You can rise above its frequency, gently and consciously, with a pen in your hand, a breath in your lungs and your feet grounded in the now. And of course, getting bare-footed in the garden can be the most beneficial "grounding tool"!

Worry may visit, but it doesn't have to stay. You hold the tools to refocus, recharge and return to peace - one moment, one breath, one vibration at a time.

A Gentle Note to End On

And remember, you are not alone. We all experience times/moments of overwhelm, and our thoughts and feelings are often more alike than we realise.

If this resonated with you, or you know someone who might benefit from it, please feel free to share it.

And if you'd like support to explore what's beneath the surface, gain clarity and move forward in a new direction with more ease, understanding and perspective. I'm here to support you when you're ready.

Blowing Up the Balloon

I love analogies! When I am trying to explain or promote a particular way of perspective, I just love using analogies.

They are fun - keep things "light" and are to-the-point.

Energetically speaking, when you are thinking and talking about something which has upset you in some way, or you are thinking/worrying too much about a particular situation which needs to be resolved, I always say “STOP BLOWING UP THE BALLOON!”

The more energy you put into a situation, whether it be thought or speech – you are figuratively making the situation bigger! Just like blowing up a balloon. The more energy (air) you blow into the balloon, the bigger it gets.

This is a great reminder of how we can “control” and “help ourselves” to refrain from making a particular situation worse. A great reminder to use the energy we have to put to better use.

Rather than “imagining outcomes” or “thinking the worst”, see this as an opportunity to put your energy into the outcome you wish to “happen/create!”

A Gentle Note to End On

And remember, you are not alone. We all experience times/moments of overwhelm, and our thoughts and feelings are often more alike than we realise.

If this resonated with you, or you know someone who might benefit from it, please feel free to share it.

Creative Visualisation

The Universe is seen as a vast system of energy constantly changing and in flux. The Universe does not know right from wrong. It only understands "energy" in its various forms and "vibration" is one such form of energy.

Keeping your “vibe” high and thinking about what you do want to attract into your life is a wonderful practice to help magnatise similar alignments into your life ie. like attracts like (often associated with the “Law of Attraction.”)

Creative Visualisation is using the power of your own imagination to create vivid mental images of what you want to change or create in your life.

Creation starts from thought. A thought or idea always comes before the manifestation. If you mentally visualise the desired outcome or goal then you are essentially programming your subconscious mind to make it a reality.

There is a fabulous book written by Shakti Gawin called “CREATIVE VISUALISATION".

I first read this book back in the early 80’s and personally used Shakti’s teachings many times to inspire me to use my imagination to create positive changes in my life. (See the example “Manifesting A New Flat” associated with Creative Visualisation.) This book guides and teaches practical methods to incorporate in your daily life which will help you to use the power of our imagination to create what you want in your life.

Manifesting a New Flat .... A True Story

I was living in Sydney and the tenancy lease on my flat was about to expire and the owners were not renewing the lease as they wanted to conduct renovations.

Having read Shakti Gawain’s book on “Creative Visualisation”, I decided to give it a try.

I thought about what I wanted the flat to “look” like: Two bedrooms; comfortable and spacious with plenty storage; clean, bright and airy with a garden or balcony area; wooden floors, (no carpets); a good sized kitchen; a laundry; quiet location and within walking distance of the beach.

Within a week I read an advertisement pretty much covering all and more the factors I was visualising for my new “perfect” accommodation. I telephoned the number on the advert and felt deflated as soon as I heard where the flat was situated.

It had everything that I had visualised and created in my “minds eye”. The only thing I had forgotten to visualise was that the flat would need to be on or near a bus/train station (I had no car).

           Unfortunately, it was not.

I learned a lot from that. If I am going to be so good at visualisation - I need to be a bit more specific. It does not need to be entirely “specific”, but I had omitted a big part of what I was trying to create.

No FAIL – just a First Attempt In Learning!

A Gentle Note to End On

And remember, you are not alone. We all experience times/moments of overwhelm, and our thoughts and feelings are often more alike than we realise.

Day Dreamer or Unaware Meditator

Throughout my adult life I have listened to many people who have championed meditation and often say "everyone should meditate" and instantaneously I used to say "I can't meditate!" My mind just keeps bringing in unwanted thoughts and I become restless!

It wasn’t until much later in life I had an epiphany regarding meditation - I was a daydreamer.

It was even written in my primary school report: “Seonaid often sits daydreaming whilst in class!”

What was I daydreaming about? I could be sitting in a classroom and see a tree outside gently moving in the breeze. Looking at the movement of the tree was enough for me to sit and stare (daydream). Watching the leaves on the branch moving, waving as the branch moved up and down hypnotising me as I watched. I would notice the colours from one part of the tree to another – which leaves were in the sunlight and which leaves were in the shade.

Was this daydreaming as my teacher called it? No, I think it was my “unknowing practice” of actually meditating!

Meditation is a practice in which an individual uses various techniques to focus the mind, achieving a state of mental clarity and promote emotional calmness. It often involves focusing on a particular object, thought, or activity to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state.

I believe I was an unconscious meditator at an early age!

There are many forms of meditation:

           · Mindfulness meditation.

           · Concentration meditation.

           · Loving-Kindness meditation.

           · Transcendental meditation.

           · Guided meditation.

           · Body Scan meditation, and perhaps

           · DAYDREAMING MEDITATION?

To all of the daydreamers out there – I SALUTE YOU!

You now know that you have been meditating whilst daydreaming - allowing for mental relaxation and creative thinking!
