The Power of Language: How Our Words Shape Our Reality

Seonaid Jones • April 11, 2025

As a holistic counsellor, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful language can be. The words we use don’t just describe our world - they create it.

When we constantly tell ourselves we're worried, anxious, or not good enough, our brain starts to believe it, and our body follows suit.

But when we change the way we speak to ourselves, we can shift our energy and our mindset toward a more positive, empowered space.  It’s a small change in perspective that can make a big difference in our overall well-being.

Overcoming Anxiety Through Positive Self-Talk

One of the simplest yet most effective tools for overcoming anxiety is changing the way we speak to ourselves. Think about it - if you’re afraid of something, like public speaking, and you tell yourself you're anxious because you're "just not good at it," you're unknowingly setting yourself up for a stressful experience. But it doesn’t have to be that way. By intentionally replacing those negative thoughts with positive affirmations, we can create a more balanced and calm state of mind.

Here are a few steps I recommend helping overcome anxiety before it takes hold:

Create a List of Affirmations

Write down a few positive affirmations or reassuring thoughts that you can return to whenever anxiety starts to creep in. Taking a moment to read through them can help you shift into a more grounded, positive mindset. These might include:

  • "This doesn’t have to be as difficult as I think."
  • "I am prepared, and I can handle this."
  • "I’ve faced challenges before, and I’ll succeed again."
  • "Mistakes are part of growth, and I embrace them."
  • "I am in control of how I respond to situations."
  • "I trust myself to navigate this."

Prepare and Rehearse

Give yourself the best possible chance to succeed by preparing thoroughly. The more prepared you feel, the more confident you’ll be. Rehearse your material or situation and pair that with your positive affirmations. This combination will help you feel calm and in control, empowering you to move forward with clarity.

Celebrate Your Progress

No matter what the outcome, take a moment to acknowledge how far you’ve come. Self-praise is incredibly important, especially when we face challenges. By celebrating even small wins, you reinforce your growth and resilience. Some affirmations to reflect on might include:

  • "I did my best, and that’s something to be proud of."
  • "I handled that situation with grace and confidence."
  • "I’m growing stronger with each experience."
  • "I’m proud of my progress, no matter how small."
  • "Every step I take brings me closer to my goals."

It’s about being kind to yourself and recognizing that growth is a journey. By integrating these practices into your daily life, you’ll start to notice how they shift your mindset and energy toward a more positive, peaceful place.

A Gentle Note to End On

And remember - you're not alone. We all experience times/moments of overwhelm. And our thoughts and feelings are often more alike than we realise.

If this resonated with you, or you know someone who might benefit from it, please feel free to share it.

And if you'd like support to explore what's beneath the surface, gain clarity and move forward in a new direction with more ease, understanding and perspective. I'm here to support you when you're ready.

THE FEELING NO ONE TALKS ABOUT Loneliness is something we all experience at some point - but it’s not something many of us feel comfortable talking about. It can linger in the background for so many people, no matter their age or circumstance. Over the years, I’ve come to realise how deeply we need to feel connected - to be seen, heard, and accepted for who we are. To feel like we belong. That we have a tribe. A community. People we can show up to as our full selves, without masks or pretence. This can be especially true for men.

In today's fast-paced world, the concept of setting boundaries is gaining increasing attention. But what does it really mean to create boundaries, and how can we approach this subject in a way that is kind, empowering, and doesn’t come across as harsh or uncaring - especially when it comes to family and friends? Here are some thoughts about establishing boundaries in a way that is clear yet compassionate. At its core, creating boundaries is about honouring yourself - recognising your needs and taking responsibility for your well-being. Boundaries are an essential tool in maintaining balance, protecting your energy, and ensuring you show up as the best version of yourself for others.
