Day Dreamer or Unaware Meditator

Seonaid Jones • December 1, 2024

Throughout my adult life I have listened to many people who have championed meditation and often say "everyone should meditate" and instantaneously I used to say "I can't meditate!" My mind just keeps bringing in unwanted thoughts and I become restless!

It wasn’t until much later in life I had an epiphany regarding meditation - I was a daydreamer.

It was even written in my primary school report: “Seonaid often sits daydreaming whilst in class!”

What was I daydreaming about? I could be sitting in a classroom and see a tree outside gently moving in the breeze. Looking at the movement of the tree was enough for me to sit and stare (daydream). Watching the leaves on the branch moving, waving as the branch moved up and down hypnotising me as I watched. I would notice the colours from one part of the tree to another – which leaves were in the sunlight and which leaves were in the shade.

Was this daydreaming as my teacher called it?  No, I think it was my “unknowing practice” of actually meditating!

Meditation is a practice in which an individual uses various techniques to focus the mind, achieving a state of mental clarity and promote emotional calmness. It often involves focusing on a particular object, thought, or activity to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state.

I believe I was an unconscious meditator at an early age!

There are many forms of meditation:

·   Mindfulness meditation.

·   Concentration meditation.

·   Loving-Kindness meditation.

·   Transcendental meditation.

·   Guided meditation.

·   Body Scan meditation, and perhaps

·   DAYDREAMING MEDITATION?

To all of the daydreamers out there – I SALUTE YOU!

You now know that you have been meditating whilst daydreaming - allowing for mental relaxation and creative thinking!

A Gentle Note to End On

And remember, you are not alone. We all experience times/moments of overwhelm, and our thoughts and feelings are often more alike than we realise.

If this resonated with you, or you know someone who might benefit from it, please feel free to share it.

And if you'd like support to explore what's beneath the surface, gain clarity and move forward in a new direction with more ease, understanding and perspective. I'm here to support you when you're ready.

THE FEELING NO ONE TALKS ABOUT Loneliness is something we all experience at some point - but it’s not something many of us feel comfortable talking about. It can linger in the background for so many people, no matter their age or circumstance. Over the years, I’ve come to realise how deeply we need to feel connected - to be seen, heard, and accepted for who we are. To feel like we belong. That we have a tribe. A community. People we can show up to as our full selves, without masks or pretence. This can be especially true for men.

As a holistic counsellor, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful language can be. The words we use don’t just describe our world - they create it. When we constantly tell ourselves we're worried, anxious, or not good enough, our brain starts to believe it, and our body follows suit. But when we change the way we speak to ourselves, we can shift our energy and our mindset toward a more positive, empowered space. It’s a small change in perspective that can make a big difference in our overall well-being.
